The Nantlle Valley is the most spectacular and mythically rich 15 miles in the British Isles. The Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi is located there, and the memory of the magical protagonists: Gwydion, Arianrhod, Lleu and Blodeuwedd are all around, as are others from our great ancestral myths, including Mabon, Merlin and the Tylwyth Teg (fair folk). Their exploits are remembered by the land here, in raven haunted hillforts, place names, the song of the high mountains and the whispers of trees.
On this five day Dreaming the Land retreat, we'll walk the ancient songlines of these stories, sharing the tales, honouring the places, responding creatively to impulses that arise, to the inspiration that comes as we journey from Dinas Dinlleu, Lleu's fort on the north Wales coast, through the Nantlle Valley, into the pass of Drws y Coed (the woodland door) and onwards to the prophetic heart of Snowdonia, Dinas Emrys, the site of Merlin's first mythic prophecy.
We'll gather at Cae Mabon for the first evening, then camp in our own tents along the route, culminating at Dinas Emrys on Saturday night. Our tents will be taken from place to place each day by the Cae Mabon expedition crew, who will also cook and nourish us with delicious vegetarian wholefood throughout our expedition. Average walking distance per day is 7 miles, taking things easy over a mixture of marked paths and rougher moorland and upland terrain.
Participants will need to bring their own hiking tent, mattress, sleeping bag etc. and basic camping equipment for this adventure. This kit will be transported from campsite to campsite by our crew. This camping equipment will need to fit into a large rucksack to be carried easily from the support vehicles to the campsites each day. We'll mostly be wild camping, with one campsite with a shower and facilities on the Friday night of our journey. We'll only be carrying daypacks with our packed lunches, water and coats etc during our walks.
Cost: £265.00, which includes all camping, catering, accommodation, guide and steam train journey (on the last day) costs. We will stop occasionally at a tavern to unwind and refresh ourselves, and enjoy a pub meal at lunchtime on Saturday, for which you will need to bring along additional money.
